MOW FOOD BANK - to reach COBEM & Mon Refugee Boarding School - 25 July 2012 at 3pm

Dear All,

Moving forward, Meals on Wheels (MOW) will also be serving as a food bank that delivers donated perishable and non-perishable items to charity homes and associations. We will be organising visits to underprivileged homes during festive season and special events from time to time too.

On next Wednesday, 25 July 2012, MOW’s Food Bank will be delivering dry food items and necessities to Coalition of Burma Ethnics Malaysia (COBEM) and Mon Refugee Boarding School.

About COBEM
Over the past five to 10 years, community-based organisations representing the different ethnic nationalities from Myanmar have been formed to organise, assist, empower and protect their respective communities.

In recognition of the benefits for community-based operations in Malaysia through resource sharing and cooperation, the Coalition of Burma Ethnics Malaysia (COBEM) was formed in 2007 to respond to the needs of the ethnic refugees and migrant communities from Myanmar living in Malaysia. COBEM represents the Kachin, Karenni, Karen, Chin, Mon, Arakan and Shan ethnic communities who work closely together for the benefit of all their respective refugee communities.

Membership of the coalition includes the following community-

1.      Kachin Refugee Committee (KRC)

2.     Organisation of Karenni Development (OKD)

3.     Malaysia Karen Organisation (MKO)

4.     Chin Refugee Committee (CRC) together with Alliance for Chin refugees (ACR)

5.     Mon Refugee Organisation (MRO)

6.     Arakan Refugee Relief Committee (ARRC)

MOW FOOD BANK - Sinthamani Ashram - The Visit

One lovely Sunday morning on 1st July 2012, Meals on Wheels Penchala made its stop at Sinthamani Divine Life Ashram. Located amidst the serene village of Jinjang Utara, the Sinthamani Ashram is a well-maintained and comfortable Home for the needy and underprivileged children. The conducive surroundings coupled with fresh air and farm animals roaming freely depict a tranquil environment for the kids to grow up and bask in the charms of nature.

Entrance of Sinthamani Divine Life Ashram

When we arrived there, the residents of the Ashram – toddlers, children and youth ranging from three to 21 years old – were seen revising their homework and studying. A few of them were cleaning up the playground equipment in the garden.

The basic single storey house – once a shabby wooden house which was then renovated and refurbished over the years – comprises a spacious porch, a dining/study hall, two dormitories, a kitchen, a computer room and external bathrooms. The Ashram currently houses 49 children. There are also four single mothers who assist with the children’s daily needs, cooking, cleaning etc. as well as three aged folks
