MOW FOOD BANK - Groceries delivered over Merdeka weekend

This month, we welcome Uncle Chin and his niece, Soo Yuen to our MOW FOOD BANK program. Soo Leng (Soo Yuen's sister) and her husband were quite shock when they saw the pile of goodies we brought, this being their first month as recipient of our MOW FOOD BANK program. In addition to the usual groceries, we also brought 1 month supply of diapers and disposable underpad for her mother who is bedridden with stroke. We even brought moon cakes for the families, courtesy of one of our donors.

Uncle Chin's only child, Chuan Yoong happily posed for a picture...aren't his dimples just adorable!!!

In the home of Mr Chok ... Bro Ivan always have a ready smile for the two orphans, Chloe and Lucas.

And groceries for Mdm Ng and her husband...

On Sat, Kim and Lew delivered groceries to families in Desa Rejang, and were invited to a Raya Open House organized by several of the families along the corridor of their flat.

We sampled the home-cooked Kelantan laksa and laksam ... both were yummy!

Despite the space constraint, the families make do with what they have and are obviously enjoying the festivities.

As some of the families were not at home when we delivered the groceries, the items were all temporarily stored in Aida's house.

Over at Taman Melati, Zabiyah and her elderly mum came down to collect the groceries, while Fazilah's kind neighbor helped her carry the groceries up to her flat. As usual, we also brought Peptamen Junior milk and diapers for Fazilah's daughter, Siti Nurmaisara.

In Sentul, Vijaya and her sons received the groceries from us, including diapers and Everyday milk for Sasi.

Another month of groceries delivered, means food on the table for the PPR families for at least the next couple of weeks or even a month for smaller families.

On behalf of the families, Ti-Ratana Meals on Wheels would like to acknowledge the generous contribution of the following donors who made August 2013 MOW FOOD BANK possible:

MOW HAPPY CHILD – Home Sweet Home for Valentino

Latest update (18 Oct 2013) : GOOD NEWS!!! Valentino responded well to the treatment for his infection and was discharged on 5 Oct 2013. He left for home in Sarawak on the same day. He will be returning to UMMC for his quarterly check-up, and MOW will continue to support him.

Thank you Datin Shiou Bin for your contribution towards Valentino's well-being while he was in UMMC.

*********************************************************************************
Valentino, an 8 year-old Iban boy from Sarawak was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia, a rare and serious blood disorder, in Jan 2013 by doctors in Hospital Kuching. In Mar 2013, he was transferred to UMMC (PJ) for a bone marrow transplant (BMT). He underwent the BMT procedure and after 3 months plus in UMMC, he returned to Hospital Kuching in July 2013.

His 4 year-old sister was the donor.

Two weeks after returning to Kuching, he had a serious infection on the right side of his brain that caused paralysis on the left side of his body – he could not talk, eat or move. He was transferred back to UMMC in July 2013, and after more than a month of treatment, he is able to talk, eat and move but is still unable to walk. However, the infection has moved down to his lungs and he is now battling with lung infection and tuberculosis. He eats porridge and Peptamen Junior milk provided by the hospital. The mother, Lily, does not know how much longer he needs to be treated in UMMC.

Lily practically lives in the hospital. Her husband sends her RM250 per month, which is barely enough to cover her own meals and her son’s needs. She sometimes skipped meals when she runs out of funds. The good doctors in UMMC personally help with the son’s diapers and sometimes buy food for her.

Valentino’s needs (RM468 per month)
Tena adult diapers (M) – 1 pack of 10 pcs per day @ RM14 x 30 packs = RM420 per month
Wet wipes – 3 days per box of 80 pcs @ RM4.80 x 10 boxes = RM48 per month

Valentino’s family
His father, Edward Sadai works as a labourer in a timber camp with a monthly salary of RM700. Lily, the mother is a housewife. His two younger siblings, Clerrintia Mas aged 4 yrs and Riskey Garie 3 yrs live with the grandmother, as Lily is taking care of Valentino at UMMC. She is not able to get help from her or her husband’s siblings.

Valentino is MOW HAPPY CHILD’s third candidate. His needs of diapers and wet wipes will be funded from Datin Shiou Bin’s donation, for as long as he is undergoing treatment in UMMC. Thank you so much Datin - Lily and Valentino are truly grateful for your kind and generous contribution.

MOW GRANTS - Medical subsidy for severely injured cat

This cat was brought to the clinic in a very critical condition by Ms Chia. Ti-Ratana MOW GRANTS contributed a small sum via AnimalCare, to the hefty bill of RM2550.00. The cat is now recovering in Ms Chia's home. She is trying to find a permanent for the cat, failing which she is likely to adopt the cat herself.

MOW FOOD BANK - Nutren milk delivered to Mdm Yap

Since we posted the plight of our new FOOD BANK families less than 2 weeks ago, many generous donors came forward to offer support in cash and kind. Click below to read more about the families.

Knowing how desperately the family needs help, Bro Ivan collected 16 tins of Nutren milk from Datin Shiou Bin this morning, and immediately delivered them to Mdm Yap's daughter (Soo Yuen) at their flat in Sg Besi. It was such a relief to the family as the cost of the milk takes up a big chunk of Soo Yuen's salary.

We will be providing Mdm Yap with 10 tins of Nutren, 240 pieces of diapers and 60 pieces of disposable underpad every month from the funds collected from our generous donors ...

MOW FOOD BANK - Sponsorship of Nutren for Mdm Chin Soo Yuen's mother

Thank you all for coming forward with your support for Soo Yuen's family. To-date, we have received commitments for the following:

LGB Group - RM100 worth of monthly groceries for 1 year (Aug 2013 to July 2014)
Teoh Seok Thuen - RM200
Chin Chee Kin - RM100
Cindy Lim - 30 pieces of disposable underpad
Chin Chee Keong - RM100 per month for 6 months (Aug 2013 to Jan 2014)
Tommy - 100 pieces of diapers and 100 pieces of disposable underpaid for 6 months (Aug 2013 to Jan 2014)
JN - RM700

With the cash contributions, we will be able to purchase and sustain Soo Yuen's mother's only source of nutrient, i.e. Nutren milk powder for 2 months plus. She consumes 10 tins (900 gm tin) per month, and each tin cost almost RM70. She has been in this condition for a year without much improvement. We are uncertain how long she will remain like this, and continuing to add stress to their only source of income, i.e. Soo Yuen's salary.

Therefore, we would like to appeal again to kind donors to help Soo Yuen's family, especially for the costly milk powder, Nutren.

Click on the link below to read more about Soo Yuen's family:

If you wish to help Soo Yuen's family, you can deposit your donation into our account:

If you have any questions, please contact June at trccpenchala@gmail.com or call +603-7784 9002 / +6012-2409020.

MOW FOOD BANK - Seeking sponsorship for two new families

Over the Raya weekend, Bro Ivan and I visited Uncle Chin who was referred to Ti-Ratana Meals on Wheels as a potential candidate to be included in our MOW FOOD BANK program. He then requested that we visit his bedridden sister-in-law who happens to live in the same block of flats. Below is a summary of the pieces of information we were able to gather during the visit. We hope their predicament will touch you in some ways and you will find the compassion to render some help to these two families.

Uncle Chin Hin Loong
Uncle Chin lives in a flat in Sg Besi with his 10 year old son, Chuan Yoong. His wife died at the age of 44 years in July 2013, after battling with kidney disease for the past 4 years. She was on dialysis for the past 2 years which exhausted the family’s savings. We could sense that he greatly misses his wife and is still adjusting to his new life without the wife.

Uncle Chin works in a factory producing snack foods, although his left arm is scarred and weak after a nerve surgery 6 years ago.

He takes home about RM1,500 per month after the mandatory deductions. He owns the flat he is staying but is paying a monthly installment of RM250 for the housing loan (20 year loan of which he has another 15 years to pay). Maintenance of the flat is RM70 (inclusive of water) and electricity is RM70 per month.

His other big expenses are for his son's education:
RM350 – goes to a relative who lives a few doors away to care for his son after school and providing him with lunch on Mondays to Fridays.
RM95 – son’s tuition
RM60 – son’s computer lessons in school
RM65 – son’s transport to school (private van)
RM80 – son’s pocket money to school (RM4/day)

All these expenses totaled RM1,040, and the balance of RM460 is for household expenses like groceries (he cooks dinner for himself and his son), breads/buns for his son’s breakfast on school days, petrol for his motorbike, his own lunch while at work and other incidentals, which is barely enough with the high cost of living in Klang Valley.

Both Uncle Chin and Chuan Yoong are trying to move on with their lives after losing their beloved wife and mother respectively. Chuan Yoong attends school at SJKC Kwong Hon, Sg Besi and according to the father is quite a good student but a little mischievous.

Mdm Chin Soo Yuen

Soo Yuen is the niece of Uncle Chin. She lives two floors above Uncle Chin, with her two children (Jia Fui, 5 yrs and Jia Chian, 11 yrs) and her mother who is bedridden. The mother suffered a serious stroke in April 2012 and was paralyzed. After 3 weeks in HUKM, she was sent home. Since then, the family has been caring for her at home. Soo Yuen’s elder sister, Soo Leng who lives in Serdang comes daily to care for her mother while Soo Yuen goes to work. Wth the help of her younger brother who has a car, she takes her mother to HUKM once a week for physiotherapy, and accupuncture in Old Klang Rd 3 times a week. The mother sees the doctor in HUKM once every 3 months. With a year of treatment, the mother has improved a little (she can slightly move one side of her body) but by and large, she is still immobile and bedridden.

Soo Yuen’s father has a second family and no longer comes home. The father of Soo Yuen’s two children are also nowhere to be seen and not mentioned at all when we visited the family.

Soo Yuen works in a garment factory in Kota Damansara and makes about RM2000 a month, including OT. The bulk of her income goes to her mother’s monthly expenses (total RM1,438):

RM680 – Nutren milk powder (this is her only nutrient and fed through a tube). She consumes one 900gm tin in 3 days, which works out to 10 tins a month x RM68/tin.
RM344 – diapers (Adult M). She uses 7-8 pcs/day or 240 pcs/month or 16 packs x RM21.50/pack of 15 pcs
RM60 – disposable underpad – 2 pcs/day @ RM1/pc
RM264 – accupuncture – RM22 x 3 times a week x 4 weeks

Other big monthly expenses are for the house and her two school-going children (total RM888):
RM250 – monthly installment for flat mortgage
RM70 – maintenance and water
RM70 - electricity
RM100 – to Soo Leng to care for her two children after school and providing them with lunch.
RM160 – Jia Fui’s kindergarten fees
RM33 – Jia Chian’s tuition in school
RM60 – son’s computer lessons in school
RM65 – Jia Chian’s transport to school
RM80 – Jia Chian’s pocket money to school (RM4/day)

Their total monthly expenses exceeds Soo Yuen’s salary and the family is struggling to make ends meet. Soo Leng’s husband works in printing and they have 3 children of their own, thus cannot help much.

How you can help

You can support the families as follows:

1. Monthly groceries for the MOW FOOD BANK program - this will be RM100 per family per month.

2. Other expenses - this will include Soo Yuen's mother's medical expenses (milk, diapers, etc), the children's education expenses, or just a general donation towards the family. Donation towards milk, diapers, etc, does not necessarily be for the full month ... whatever amount will be welcomed.

For both the above programs, you can deposit your donation into our account:

Account Name: Ti Ratana Community Centre Penchala
CIMB Account No: 14660000259057

Please email a copy of the deposit slip to June at trccpenchala@gmail.com, and let her know how you wish us to use your donation.

If its for MOW FOOD BANK, please let June know the family(s) you would like to sponsor and for how many months.

If you have any questions, please contact June at trccpenchala@gmail.com or call +603-7784 9002 / +6012-2409020.

We pray for Soo Yuen's mother to recover and gain her mobility soon. In the meantime, these two families desperately need your help, in whatever way you can ... every little bit helps. THANK YOU!

MOW FOOD BANK - July groceries for buka Puasa

Groceries for July were delivered early, i.e. on 21st July, so that our Muslim families can use them for the fasting month.

After a hearty breakfast, our MOW FOOD BANK volunteers were all ready to load the bags of rice and boxes of groceries onto the MOW baby van.

And off they went to the first stop, PPR Desa Rejang, where the families were eagerly waiting for the monthly supplies.

The families with school-going children also received reimbursement for their children's school bus fares for May/June, ranging from RM80 to RM210 per family. Thanks to a generous donor, the money came in useful for additional expenses during the fasting month and Raya.

Next stop was PPR Taman Melati ...

Pn Wena and her son in Jinjang receiving their goodies ...

Kim delivered groceries to the Maran family on 28 July. Sasi was just fed his milk by the mother Vijaya and is sleeping on the floor, his usual spot near the house TV/radio.

Since its a Sat, the other children were at home too. They were just about to go to their sister's school. She will be sitting for her UPSR this year and the parents are required to meet the teacher after the results of every school exam to review her performance. She promised the mother she can score 6As and 1B ... which in my view is pretty outstanding considering the family's socio-economic situation.

A BIG THANK YOU to the following kind donors for their contribution to July 2013 groceries:

Yu Chee Koon
Tan Kai Ming
R.G.
Stone Empire
Joyce Ong
Celine Yong Chooi Ping
C.S.H.
Angie
Tracy
Peter Liew
Felicia Ong

And also a BIG THANK YOU to Yen Ling and her friend who visited the 8 Muslim families in PPR Desa Rejang and Taman Melati on 20th July and presented each family with flour, sugar, margerine, grape cordial, cooking oil, tray of eggs, potatoes and dates (kurma). They also gave each family a raya packet of RM50, and each child a raya packet of RM20 plus a pack of goodies  containing chips, chocolate and jelly.

MOW CELEBRATE - Puan Sri Mae Cheng celebrates her birthday with Ti-Ratana children

The haze did not dampen the jovial atmosphere of Puan Sri Mae Cheng's birthday celebration at Ti-Ratana Welfare Society (TRWS) on Sunday, 23rd June 2013. Upon arrival, Puan Sri and her family members were met by Ven. Datuk K. Dhammaratana.

Puan Sri was then given a rousing welcome to the beat of the the 24-drums performance by the children of Ti-Ratana.

The guests of honor were further entertained by the children with more performances.

Datin Catherine Lai briefed the special guests about Ti-Ratana Meals on Wheels and Welfare Society.

A tour of the TRWS facility gave Puan Sri and her entourage the opportunity to visit the residents of TRWS, including the sickly, the old folks and babies.

This was followed by lunch dana for Ven. Datuk K. Dhammaratana and his monks, and presentation of gifts.

Apart from sponsoring the lunch dana as well as lunch for the 200+ residents of TRWS, Puan Sri also presented all the children with angpows.

To express their thanks, the children made a special birthday card for Puan Sri. It was indeed a very special and memorable day for the TRWS residents.

Ti-Ratana Meals on Wheels and Ti-Ratana Welfare Society extend our gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to Puan Sri Mae Cheng for sharing this special day with the less fortunate. May all the goodness from your meritorious deeds brings abundance of peace, happiness and joy to you and your family.
