Meals on Wheels (MOW) Celebrate Deepavali - A celebration of LOVE

Meals on Wheels (MOW) celebrated Deepavali at Klang Utama Caring Home last Sunday, 19th October, with lots of LOVE.


It all began with the congregation of The Fraternity Riders and MOW's volunteers at our Penchala Centre, where the convoy took off and headed towards Klang at 11am.

On the way to the Home, we "picked up" other 10 bikers before arriving at the Home. You can imagine the impressive sound of the bike's engine as we turned into the Home and our arrival caused quite a stir in the quiet neighbourhood.

The children were all excited with the arrival of so many guests and of course, the sight and sound of the big roaring bikes.  This caused some chaos, but one of the caretakers of the Home, aka 'Teacher" managed to calm the children and got them seated for a brief welcome and greeting. The head caretaker aka "Mummy" looked tired but happy that we chose her Home to celebrate the festival of lights.

By then it was past noon, so we fed the children with rice, mutton curry, fried tenggiri fish and vegetables. Our brothers from the Fraternity Riders, serving lunch was a sight to behold!

We also brought ladhu, assortment of muruku, apples and pears for dessert but the children were too stuffed after lunch, and these sweet stuff were saved for tea later in the day.

After lunch, some of the children fooled around with gadgets like camera, iPad, walkie talkie, helmets and handphones of the volunteers. They loved having their pictures taken and able to see it instantly.

No MOW event will be complete without games, and this was handled by Fuzi Magic, Christine and friends, with the help of the Teacher. Winners were awarded prizes. And all the kids were given goodie bags and cookies.

With the cash donations we collected for this event, apart from paying for the lunch, we purchased two food trolleys and clothes dryers as requested by Mummy.

The highlight of the day was of course the joy ride given by the Fraternity Riders to the children as well as some of the volunteers. The children were thrilled and of course, one VROOM VROOM ride around the neighbourhood is just not enough. The adults hop on the bike for a thrill ride too!

The bike ride marked the end of MOW's Deepavali celebration at the Home. It was indeed a celebration of LOVE. With about 30 volunteers from The Fraternity Riders, Fuzi Magic, Christine and friends, and of course MOW, there were plenty of LOVE for the 40 plus children living in this Home.

For the children of Klang Utama Caring Home ... it was a wonderful and joyous day to remember and cherish. For the volunteers, it was a Sunday well-spent.

Meals on Wheels (MOW) Celebrate - Deepavali at Selangor Children Welfare Home (Sunday, 19th Oct 2014)

Selangor Children Welfare Home (Pertubuhan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Selangor) was established in 2004. Under the management of Madam Usah and her group of six caretakers, the Home cares for 42 children, of which one child is an orphan and the rest are mostly left in the Home by single mothers. Most of the children are above 12 to 18 years, ten are 12 years and below, including a 1 year old baby. All the children are still in school.

With so many children to care for, it is no wonder, the Home was bustling with activities when Bro Tommy and I visited the Home in the afternoon of Saturday, 27th Sep. Lunch was just over, and some of the kids are just chatting, while others are helping with the laundry.

There was also a group of well-wishers who brought gifts to the delight of the children.

Several weeks ago, Madam Usah was in a quandary ... the Home where the boys were staying was burned to the ground, and all 42 children had to squeeze into a single storey house where the girls were staying.

However, after about a month, they managed to rent another house nearby, and they are all ready to celebrate Deepavali.

Meals on Wheels will be bringing cheer to the Home, after their recent misfortune, details as below:

Wish List

The Home requested for clothes dryers and dish trolleys. We are also looking for contributions for the event such as lunch, goodie bags, Indian sweets/muruku, and entertainment/games for the children.

Please note for wish list items:

• Clothes dryers, dish trolleys, utility box - we have pre-ordered from a store in Klang, and anyone who wishes to partially/fully sponsor this can donate cash.
• Goodie bags - donors can either buy and pack the goodie bags and bring to the Home on the 19th Oct (please let us know if you are doing so, and it will be good if the 50 goodie bags contain similar contents), or donate cash and we will buy/pack the goodie bags.
• Lunch - we will order from a restaurant in Klang, and donor can sponsor partially/fully by donating cash.
• Indian sweets and muruku - donors can either buy these items and bring to the Home on the 19th Oct (please let us know if you are doing so), or donate cash and we will buy the items.

Celebrating the joy of giving

Meals on Wheels (MOW) celebrated Hari Raya Aidil Fitri with Children from Persatuan Kebajijan Anak-Anak Yatim Al-Habbah on Sunday, 17th August. An annual tradition since MOW was established, the event was aimed at bringing joy to the Children, and to express appreciation to the many dedicated Ustaz who worked selflessly to provide shelter, education and care for the Children.

The Children's Home is literally "in the woods", away from the hustle and bustle of the KL city. As the MOW baby van curved up the dirt road leading to the Home, I had this nostalgic "balik kampung" feeling. And couldn't help but hummed to the tune of the ever popular song by the late Sudirman ...

Nestled along the hillside, the 3-storey white building is surrounded by lush greeneries and mature trees. This is both, home and school to 30 plus children, some from broken homes, some orphans and the rest from poor families from the neighbourhood.

When we arrived, we could hear the unmistakable sound of festivities in full swing with cheerful Raya music in the background. The moment we stepped onto the porch, we were ushered by the bubbly Ustaz Ghani to officiate the presentation of tables and chairs from MOW donors to the Home. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was organized by the Ustaz and we were so touched by the simple yet thoughtful gesture.

This was followed by a simple but delicious chicken rice meal, complete with cendol and kuih raya for dessert, and the Malaysian signature drink of teh tarik, all laid-out in buffet-style. En Khalid who is the caterer for the lunch gave us a very good price, and from the feedback we received, the food was yummy! Terima kasih En Khalid!

I chatted with three of the younger children eating in one of the rooms in the Home - Zaim from Setapak, Khairudin who sometimes visit his "nenek" in Taman Bolton, and Aizat whose mother works as a cook in a canteen from Taman Medan. From their clean plates, it is evident they loved the chicken rice. But more importantly, they all looked TRULY HAPPY ... and this is testament to the effort put in by the Ustaz and caretakers of the Home.

While the younger children were savouring their lunch, some of older children were in the make-shift football ground, trying to score as many goals as they can as there were prizes for the top two teams. Catherine's boys couldn't resist joining in the football games. Winners were presented with brand new jerseys, while the losers did not go home empty-handed.

In the midst of lunch and football, Ustaz Ghani conducted a tour around the Home and its surroundings - including the kitchen, the big shower area with a well and a quaint little pond at the back of the home, where one can just sip coffee on a relaxing day (which I am sure the Ustaz does so once in a while to get some quiet time).

It was such a pleasant and fulfilling morning for everyone at the event. Our MOW Volunteers had so much fun, trying to pluck duku but with little success. The neighbours witnessed this and were so kind to pluck some for us to take home. Of course, bro Andrew could not resist trying some on the spot.

Also at the event was Puan Fuzi Hanim, the founder of Fuzi Magic, an organisation with a mission to Build Bridges of Goodwill by linking the privileged to the under-privileged, with the aim to inspire children to be assets to the country and blessing to the world. Puan Aida, an MOW Volunteer, and her children also joined us for this Raya celebration.

The event ended with presentation of a large rice cooker from MOW donors to the Home, token of appreciation in the form of hampers to En Khalid, the Chairman of the Home, and Datin Catherine, the Chairman of MOW.  Common theme in the closing speeches given by En Khalid, Datin Catherine and Kim, was the role of education in the Children's pursuit of a better life.
