MOW HAPPY CHILD - Introducing our second HAPPY CHILD, Sasitharan

Mr Maran and his wife, Vijaya, have six children.  Their middle son, Sasitharan is a 12-year-old disabled boy.

Sasi was born normal, but at 2 months old he had liquid in his brain. After a series of 5 operations, 3 on the head/brain and 2 on his stomach (at the age of 2 months, 5 months, 1 yr+, 2.5 yrs, and 4 yrs), he became blind and crippled. Sasitharan's head is still swollen due to excessive water in his brain. Sasi can only eat liquids and soft foods and is dependent on his mother's 24-hour care. Doctor recommended Sasi drinks Simlac but the family could not afford this expensive milk. Vijaya finally settled on Everyday which is more affordable and tolerated by Sasi.

His father, Maran, 38 years, works as a gardener at a Sentul school. He is the only breadwinner and has to support his wife and six children with his salary of about RM900 per month. The family lives in the City Hall flats in Sentul paying a rent of RM130 per month. Sasi’s other 5 siblings are normal school-going children.

Apart from having to pay rent and other living expenses such as utilities, food and supplies for the family, school expenses, the family also needs to fork out expensive taxi fares whenever Sasitharan needs to go to the hospital. With an OKU son, the couple is given RM80 per month by the Social Welfare Dept. Sasi's needs comes up to almost RM100 per month which comprise the items below:

Everyday powdered milk – 1.1 kg pack per month (RM27.15)
Nestum cereal - 250gm pack x 3 packs per month (RM3.50 x 3 = RM10.50)
Gripe water (for bloating) – 148ml bottle x 2 bottles per month (RM10 per bottle x 2 = RM20)
L-size diapers – 72 pcs pack per month (RM23)
Hospital visits – 1 visit per month @ RM15 return taxi fare

In his blind and crippled state, Sasi does not have much of a life but he is happy. He has a very good sense of hearing and enjoys listening to music, so he is usually in the part of the house nearest to the radio:)

Sasi's family is currently in MOW FOOD BANK program whereby we provide groceries up to RM100 per month.

If you would like to specifically help with Sasi's expenses, please contact June (03-77849002 or email trccpenchala@gmail.com) or Kim (012-3036019 or email yeapkimsee@hotmail.com).

Donations in terms of cash/cheque can be deposited into our account (Acc Name: Ti Ratana Community Centre Penchala, CIMB, Acc No: 14660000259057).

Please email the bank-in slip to trccpenchala@gmail.com and specify in the email the funds is for MOW HAPPY CHILD - SASI. We do not encourage cash/cheque to be given directly to the recipients, so that we can better monitor how your contribution is spent.

On behalf Maran, Vijaya, Sasi and his siblings, we are grateful for whatever support you can extend to the family.

MOW HAPPY CHILD – Introducing MOW’s latest program

First and foremost, we would like to THANK all our DONORS for your support of our projects and activities, be it through contribution in cash, materials or volunteer time. We have grown through leaps and bounds, and this is attributed to the strong support we have been getting from our DONORS and VOLUNTEERS.

We are happy to share the good news with all our SUPPORTERS that we have embarked on a new program, called MOW HAPPY CHILD. The objective of MOW HAPPY CHILD is to provide support to terminally or chronically ill children from under-privileged families. The support can be in the form of sustenance and medicine, to enable the child to have a better quality of life.

Siti Nurmaisara, who has cystic fibrosis is our first MOW HAPPY CHILD recipient. Click below to read more on Siti's case:

Important to understand our direct cash policy to the recipients
MOW HAPPY CHILD program is set up solely for the intention of giving support in nutrition and medicine only, as such we do not encourage cash/cheque to be given directly to the recipients. This policy by Meals on Wheels Ti-Ratana is created so that  we can manage the donation by keeping you updated on how your contribution is spent and to avoid abuse of the donation.

In the event you wish to donate cash/cheque to them directly for other expenses and other usage you are most certainly welcome to do so but we will not be in the position to manage and report on the donation.

Thank you in advance for your support in helping MOW HAPPY CHILD recipients have a better quality of life.

MOW HAPPY CHILD – Mobile clinic for Myanmarese refugee children

These innocent children were borne not knowing that they will be uprooted from Myanmar, their homeland, be stateless and living with the uncertainty of not knowing when they will finally have a place to call home. Pastor Gabriel Paul, from Full Gospel Assembly, and his wife took 23 such children into their lives in 2008 and established the Rawang Learning Centre (RLC). Most of the parents of these children work elsewhere and visit their children at RLC weekly or less often. The RLC provides shelter, food and education to these children, with the support of 3 volunteer teachers and 1 caretaker, all from the Myanmar community.

It may take as long as 5 years or even longer before their immigration papers are in order for their relocation to a country that will take them in permanently. Meanwhile, they have to survive ‘in-transition’ and make the best of the situation. To help them stay healthy, Meals on Wheels, together with Lions Club, will be providing free medical checks at a mobile clinic for these children and other Myanmarese refugees in Rawang. We will also provide vaccination for the 23 children at the RLC. We visited the Centre recently to discuss the event with Pastor Paul.

Although there are only 23 children at the RLC, we expect almost 150 refugees to turn up at this event as UNCHR has plans to conduct a registration exercise at RLC on the same day and we expect refugees from the surrounding area and beyond, to turn up for the registration.  The 150 participants is expected to comprise of:

- 23 children from RLC

- 50 adult males, 50 adult females and 25 children who will come for the UNHCR registration

Details of the mobile clinic:
Day/Date: Sunday, 9th June 2013

MOW HAPPY CHILD - UPDATE ON SITI'S DONOR LIST & A GET WELL SOON CARD TO SITI BY DATIN SERI TIARA JACQUELINA

Siti Nurmaisara, 9 years old, suffers from cystic fibrosis which is a progressive, lifelong condition, in which the glands that produce mucus, sweat and intestinal secretions do not function properly. Thick mucus accumulates in the lungs, leading to breathing difficulty and infection. It also impairs digestion, which makes it difficult for Nurmaisara to get the necessary nutrients to grow. There is no cure for cystic fibrosis, but supportive treatments are available to help improve quality of life.

After our posting on Siti's plight, we received contributions from many donors, including Datin Seri Tiara Jacquelina.

Datin Seri Tiara's representative visited Siti at her home in PPR Gombak Setia on 22nd April and delighted Siti with 2 tins of Peptamen Junior (they wanted to buy more but most pharmacies do not stock this special milk because of its short shelf life, and they only managed to buy 2 tins), a personalized get well soon card and a cheque donation.

MOW HAPPY CHILD - Update on Siti Nurmaisara

It has been a week since we posted the blog about Siti Nurmaisara, one of our MOW Food Bank family's child with cyctic fibrosis. Many things have taken place during this one week, but the good news is that Siti was discharged last Thurs, 11 Apr, and is finally home after more than 2 weeks in the hospital. Actually she was discharged on Wed evening, but because of the heavy downpour and flash floods in downtown KL, the mother was not able to get a taxi. Fortunately, there was an empty bed in the Paeds ward, and the nurse kindly allowed them to stay another night. I gave them a ride home on Thurs morning as I had some personal matter to attend to at the hospital on that day.

We stopped by a petrol station on the way to Siti's house in Gombak, to get muffins, buns and soya bean milk as they have not had their breakfast.

In the past week, many good samaritans came forward offering their support for Siti in various ways. In particular, Dr Teresa and Dr Patrick who offered to contact Nestle, the supplier of Peptamen Junior, the milk which Siti needs to consume for her sustenance, to put on weight and grow, to build immunity and less susceptible to infection, be well enough to attend school and allow her to lead as normal a childhood, as a child with cystic fibrosis can. Nestle has kindly donated 4 tins of Peptamen Junior, which were delivered to Siti at the PPR flat on Friday (12 Apr) .... Siti was sooooo HAPPY as you can see from the pictures.

We have also received cash contributions from the following kind and generous donors. The amount collected will be used to buy the milk, which is Siti's staple food, for the next few months.

1. Albert Quay  - RM200
2. Alex and Adrian Lee - RM780
3. Datin Malina Su  - RM1,000.00
4. Ms. Mala   - RM200
5. Dr. T.C  - RM300
6. Pn Sri Cecilia Lim - RM300
7. Zainal Amar  - RM250
8. Joseph Thambirajah  - RM500
9. Dr. Rabin - RM300
10. Lim Chin Kah - RM200
11.Norenshah-RM300
12. Ti-ratana MOW regular donors which we have potion out their donation for this cause.

On behalf of Siti Nurmaisara, we would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Dr Teresa, Dr Patrick, Nestle and all the donors who have so quickly come forward to help in response to Siti's plight. Siti's family is grateful for your care and support.
