MOW HAPPY CHILD - Please help Hui Lin's family to feed and care for her

This is a truly sad story. Hui Lin was previously a bright and active 9 year old. She had a sudden onset of fever and loss of consciousness just before Chinese New Year. She was intubated and ventilated for several days in the intensive care unit of UMMC. Multiple investigations were done on her, including MRI on her brain which confirmed that she had Acute Necrotising Encephalitis (brain injury with very poor prognosis).

Hui Lin is now out of the critical period. Unfortunately, she has multiple complications: bed-ridden, tube feeding, and cognitive impairment (unable to communicate). Her diet consists of only Nutren Junior milk.

She depends fully on her mother and elder brother. Her mother had also recently underwent an operation and is still recovering from the operation.

The father, who is a self-employed wireman is now the sole breadwinner to support the family of 5. Hui Lin's elder sister who is 15 yrs old is still in school, while her 23-year old brother is a draughtsman (currently on unpaid leave to help care for Hui Lin). With a total household income of RM3,500 per month, of which almost RM3,000 goes to house rental & utilities, lorry (which is used for the father's work) instalment, the family is desperately seeking help to care for Hui Lin.

Hui Lin is expected to be discharged from the hospital in a couple of weeks, depending on her progress. Currently, she needs 1 tin of 800gm of Nutren Junior milk every 2 days, or 15 tins per month. The milk cost about RM60-65 per tin, which will cost the family about RM1,000 per month. She also needs diapers and wet wipes which cost almost RM300 per month.

We are seeking donation to help Hui Lin get the nutrients and care that she needs.
Every little bit helps ...

If you wish to help Hui Lin for the purchase of milk, diapers and wet wipes, you can deposit your donation (cash or cheque) into our account:

Account Name: Ti-Ratana Community Centre Penchala
CIMB Account No: 14660000259057

Please email your deposit slip to trccpenchala@gmail.com.

For any questions or further information, please contact June at 012-2409020 or 03-77849002.

On behalf of Hui Lin and her family, we would like to thank you for your kindness.

MOW FOOD BANK - Donations for Uncle Chin and Mdm Chin

Since we posted the plight of these two families in early Aug 2013, many generous individuals have come forward with generous contributions in cash and kind. The amount we have collected so far is adequate to support Mdm Chin for the extras she has to spend for her mother's nutrients and treatment, and Uncle Chin for his son's education expenses, for the next one year or so.

Mdm Yap (Chin's mother) is now undergoing weekly accupuncture treatment from a Sinseh from Rawang who makes house calls. After two sessions, her daughter informed us that she appears to be getting better, i.e. able to talk a little. We hope she will continue to show good progress with all the from our donors.

With this blog posting, we would like to announce that we are no longer accepting cash contributions to the Chins. If you wish to donate to the Chins, you can give directly to the families. If you wish to do so, kindly contact June at 03-77849002 or trccpenchala@gmail.com, for the families contact details.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the donors for your kind and generous contributions ...

MOW FOOD BANK - Nutren milk delivered to Mdm Yap

Since we posted the plight of our new FOOD BANK families less than 2 weeks ago, many generous donors came forward to offer support in cash and kind. Click below to read more about the families.

Knowing how desperately the family needs help, Bro Ivan collected 16 tins of Nutren milk from Datin Shiou Bin this morning, and immediately delivered them to Mdm Yap's daughter (Soo Yuen) at their flat in Sg Besi. It was such a relief to the family as the cost of the milk takes up a big chunk of Soo Yuen's salary.

We will be providing Mdm Yap with 10 tins of Nutren, 240 pieces of diapers and 60 pieces of disposable underpad every month from the funds collected from our generous donors ...

MOW FOOD BANK - Sponsorship of Nutren for Mdm Chin Soo Yuen's mother

Thank you all for coming forward with your support for Soo Yuen's family. To-date, we have received commitments for the following:

LGB Group - RM100 worth of monthly groceries for 1 year (Aug 2013 to July 2014)
Teoh Seok Thuen - RM200
Chin Chee Kin - RM100
Cindy Lim - 30 pieces of disposable underpad
Chin Chee Keong - RM100 per month for 6 months (Aug 2013 to Jan 2014)
Tommy - 100 pieces of diapers and 100 pieces of disposable underpaid for 6 months (Aug 2013 to Jan 2014)
JN - RM700

With the cash contributions, we will be able to purchase and sustain Soo Yuen's mother's only source of nutrient, i.e. Nutren milk powder for 2 months plus. She consumes 10 tins (900 gm tin) per month, and each tin cost almost RM70. She has been in this condition for a year without much improvement. We are uncertain how long she will remain like this, and continuing to add stress to their only source of income, i.e. Soo Yuen's salary.

Therefore, we would like to appeal again to kind donors to help Soo Yuen's family, especially for the costly milk powder, Nutren.

Click on the link below to read more about Soo Yuen's family:

CIMB Account No: 14660000259057

Please email a copy of the deposit slip to June at trccpenchala@gmail.com, and let her know how you wish us to use your donation.

If you have any questions, please contact June at trccpenchala@gmail.com or call +603-7784 9002 / +6012-2409020.

On behalf of Soo Yuen and her family, we thank you for your kind thoughts and contributions to the family.

MOW FOOD BANK - Seeking sponsorship for two new families

Over the Raya weekend, Bro Ivan and I visited Uncle Chin who was referred to Ti-Ratana Meals on Wheels as a potential candidate to be included in our MOW FOOD BANK program. He then requested that we visit his bedridden sister-in-law who happens to live in the same block of flats. Below is a summary of the pieces of information we were able to gather during the visit. We hope their predicament will touch you in some ways and you will find the compassion to render some help to these two families.

Uncle Chin Hin Loong
Uncle Chin lives in a flat in Sg Besi with his 10 year old son, Chuan Yoong. His wife died at the age of 44 years in July 2013, after battling with kidney disease for the past 4 years. She was on dialysis for the past 2 years which exhausted the family’s savings. We could sense that he greatly misses his wife and is still adjusting to his new life without the wife.

Uncle Chin works in a factory producing snack foods, although his left arm is scarred and weak after a nerve surgery 6 years ago.

He takes home about RM1,500 per month after the mandatory deductions. He owns the flat he is staying but is paying a monthly installment of RM250 for the housing loan (20 year loan of which he has another 15 years to pay). Maintenance of the flat is RM70 (inclusive of water) and electricity is RM70 per month.

His other big expenses are for his son's education:
RM350 – goes to a relative who lives a few doors away to care for his son after school and providing him with lunch on Mondays to Fridays.
RM95 – son’s tuition
RM60 – son’s computer lessons in school
RM65 – son’s transport to school (private van)
RM80 – son’s pocket money to school (RM4/day)

All these expenses totaled RM1,040, and the balance of RM460 is for household expenses like groceries (he cooks dinner for himself and his son), breads/buns for his son’s breakfast on school days, petrol for his motorbike, his own lunch while at work and other incidentals, which is barely enough with the high cost of living in Klang Valley.

Both Uncle Chin and Chuan Yoong are trying to move on with their lives after losing their beloved wife and mother respectively. Chuan Yoong attends school at SJKC Kwong Hon, Sg Besi and according to the father is quite a good student but a little mischievous.

Mdm Chin Soo Yuen

Soo Yuen is the niece of Uncle Chin. She lives two floors above Uncle Chin, with her two children (Jia Fui, 5 yrs and Jia Chian, 11 yrs) and her mother who is bedridden. The mother suffered a serious stroke in April 2012 and was paralyzed. After 3 weeks in HUKM, she was sent home. Since then, the family has been caring for her at home. Soo Yuen’s elder sister, Soo Leng who lives in Serdang comes daily to care for her mother while Soo Yuen goes to work. Wth the help of her younger brother who has a car, she takes her mother to HUKM once a week for physiotherapy, and accupuncture in Old Klang Rd 3 times a week. The mother sees the doctor in HUKM once every 3 months. With a year of treatment, the mother has improved a little (she can slightly move one side of her body) but by and large, she is still immobile and bedridden.

Soo Yuen’s father has a second family and no longer comes home. The father of Soo Yuen’s two children are also nowhere to be seen and not mentioned at all when we visited the family.

Soo Yuen works in a garment factory in Kota Damansara and makes about RM2000 a month, including OT. The bulk of her income goes to her mother’s monthly expenses (total RM1,438):

RM680 – Nutren milk powder (this is her only nutrient and fed through a tube). She consumes one 900gm tin in 3 days, which works out to 10 tins a month x RM68/tin.
RM344 – diapers (Adult M). She uses 7-8 pcs/day or 240 pcs/month or 16 packs x RM21.50/pack of 15 pcs
RM60 – disposable underpad – 2 pcs/day @ RM1/pc
RM264 – accupuncture – RM22 x 3 times a week x 4 weeks

Other big monthly expenses are for the house and her two school-going children (total RM888):
RM250 – monthly installment for flat mortgage
RM70 – maintenance and water
RM70 - electricity
RM100 – to Soo Leng to care for her two children after school and providing them with lunch.
RM160 – Jia Fui’s kindergarten fees
RM33 – Jia Chian’s tuition in school
RM60 – son’s computer lessons in school
RM65 – Jia Chian’s transport to school
RM80 – Jia Chian’s pocket money to school (RM4/day)

Their total monthly expenses exceeds Soo Yuen’s salary and the family is struggling to make ends meet. Soo Leng’s husband works in printing and they have 3 children of their own, thus cannot help much.

How you can help

You can support the families as follows:

1. Monthly groceries for the MOW FOOD BANK program - this will be RM100 per family per month.

2. Other expenses - this will include Soo Yuen's mother's medical expenses (milk, diapers, etc), the children's education expenses, or just a general donation towards the family. Donation towards milk, diapers, etc, does not necessarily be for the full month ... whatever amount will be welcomed.

For both the above programs, you can deposit your donation into our account:

Account Name: Ti Ratana Community Centre Penchala
CIMB Account No: 14660000259057

Please email a copy of the deposit slip to June at trccpenchala@gmail.com, and let her know how you wish us to use your donation.

If its for MOW FOOD BANK, please let June know the family(s) you would like to sponsor and for how many months.

If you have any questions, please contact June at trccpenchala@gmail.com or call +603-7784 9002 / +6012-2409020.

We pray for Soo Yuen's mother to recover and gain her mobility soon. In the meantime, these two families desperately need your help, in whatever way you can ... every little bit helps. THANK YOU!

MOW HAPPY CHILD - Introducing our second HAPPY CHILD, Sasitharan

Mr Maran and his wife, Vijaya, have six children.  Their middle son, Sasitharan is a 12-year-old disabled boy.

Sasi was born normal, but at 2 months old he had liquid in his brain. After a series of 5 operations, 3 on the head/brain and 2 on his stomach (at the age of 2 months, 5 months, 1 yr+, 2.5 yrs, and 4 yrs), he became blind and crippled. Sasitharan's head is still swollen due to excessive water in his brain. Sasi can only eat liquids and soft foods and is dependent on his mother's 24-hour care. Doctor recommended Sasi drinks Simlac but the family could not afford this expensive milk. Vijaya finally settled on Everyday which is more affordable and tolerated by Sasi.

His father, Maran, 38 years, works as a gardener at a Sentul school. He is the only breadwinner and has to support his wife and six children with his salary of about RM900 per month. The family lives in the City Hall flats in Sentul paying a rent of RM130 per month. Sasi’s other 5 siblings are normal school-going children.

Apart from having to pay rent and other living expenses such as utilities, food and supplies for the family, school expenses, the family also needs to fork out expensive taxi fares whenever Sasitharan needs to go to the hospital. With an OKU son, the couple is given RM80 per month by the Social Welfare Dept. Sasi's needs comes up to almost RM100 per month which comprise the items below:

Everyday powdered milk – 1.1 kg pack per month (RM27.15)
Nestum cereal - 250gm pack x 3 packs per month (RM3.50 x 3 = RM10.50)
Gripe water (for bloating) – 148ml bottle x 2 bottles per month (RM10 per bottle x 2 = RM20)
L-size diapers – 72 pcs pack per month (RM23)
Hospital visits – 1 visit per month @ RM15 return taxi fare

In his blind and crippled state, Sasi does not have much of a life but he is happy. He has a very good sense of hearing and enjoys listening to music, so he is usually in the part of the house nearest to the radio:)

Sasi's family is currently in MOW FOOD BANK program whereby we provide groceries up to RM100 per month.

If you would like to specifically help with Sasi's expenses, please contact June (03-77849002 or email trccpenchala@gmail.com) or Kim (012-3036019 or email yeapkimsee@hotmail.com).

Donations in terms of cash/cheque can be deposited into our account (Acc Name: Ti Ratana Community Centre Penchala, CIMB, Acc No: 14660000259057).

Please email the bank-in slip to trccpenchala@gmail.com and specify in the email the funds is for MOW HAPPY CHILD - SASI. We do not encourage cash/cheque to be given directly to the recipients, so that we can better monitor how your contribution is spent.

On behalf Maran, Vijaya, Sasi and his siblings, we are grateful for whatever support you can extend to the family.

MOW HAPPY CHILD - UPDATE ON SITI'S DONOR LIST & A GET WELL SOON CARD TO SITI BY DATIN SERI TIARA JACQUELINA

Siti Nurmaisara, 9 years old, suffers from cystic fibrosis which is a progressive, lifelong condition, in which the glands that produce mucus, sweat and intestinal secretions do not function properly. Thick mucus accumulates in the lungs, leading to breathing difficulty and infection. It also impairs digestion, which makes it difficult for Nurmaisara to get the necessary nutrients to grow. There is no cure for cystic fibrosis, but supportive treatments are available to help improve quality of life.

After our posting on Siti's plight, we received contributions from many donors, including Datin Seri Tiara Jacquelina.

Datin Seri Tiara's representative visited Siti at her home in PPR Gombak Setia on 22nd April and delighted Siti with 2 tins of Peptamen Junior (they wanted to buy more but most pharmacies do not stock this special milk because of its short shelf life, and they only managed to buy 2 tins), a personalized get well soon card and a cheque donation.

MOW HAPPY CHILD - Update on Siti Nurmaisara

It has been a week since we posted the blog about Siti Nurmaisara, one of our MOW Food Bank family's child with cyctic fibrosis. Many things have taken place during this one week, but the good news is that Siti was discharged last Thurs, 11 Apr, and is finally home after more than 2 weeks in the hospital. Actually she was discharged on Wed evening, but because of the heavy downpour and flash floods in downtown KL, the mother was not able to get a taxi. Fortunately, there was an empty bed in the Paeds ward, and the nurse kindly allowed them to stay another night. I gave them a ride home on Thurs morning as I had some personal matter to attend to at the hospital on that day.

We stopped by a petrol station on the way to Siti's house in Gombak, to get muffins, buns and soya bean milk as they have not had their breakfast.

In the past week, many good samaritans came forward offering their support for Siti in various ways. In particular, Dr Teresa and Dr Patrick who offered to contact Nestle, the supplier of Peptamen Junior, the milk which Siti needs to consume for her sustenance, to put on weight and grow, to build immunity and less susceptible to infection, be well enough to attend school and allow her to lead as normal a childhood, as a child with cystic fibrosis can. Nestle has kindly donated 4 tins of Peptamen Junior, which were delivered to Siti at the PPR flat on Friday (12 Apr) .... Siti was sooooo HAPPY as you can see from the pictures.

We have also received cash contributions from the following kind and generous donors. The amount collected will be used to buy the milk, which is Siti's staple food, for the next few months.

1. Albert Quay  - RM200
2. Alex and Adrian Lee - RM780
3. Datin Malina Su  - RM1,000.00
4. Ms. Mala   - RM200
5. Dr. T.C  - RM300
6. Pn Sri Cecilia Lim - RM300
7. Zainal Amar  - RM250
8. Joseph Thambirajah  - RM500
9. Dr. Rabin - RM300
10. Lim Chin Kah - RM200
11.Norenshah-RM300
12. Ti-ratana MOW regular donors which we have potion out their donation for this cause.

On behalf of Siti Nurmaisara, we would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Dr Teresa, Dr Patrick, Nestle and all the donors who have so quickly come forward to help in response to Siti's plight. Siti's family is grateful for your care and support.

MOW HAPPY CHILD - Family with sick child needs help

One of our MOW Food Bank family recipent, Fazilah Mohd Yusof's youngest daughter has been hospitalised at the pediatric ward in KL GH for almost 10 days with a very bad lung infection.

I visited Nurmaisara at the ward this afternoon. I brought chicken rice lunch for the whole family as her other two daughters were also at the hospital since its Saturday and they are not in school. According to Fazilah, Nurmaisara is recovering from the lung infection but is still getting antibiotic treatment intravenously through her chest.

Fazilah herself looks exhausted from the long hours caring for her daughter, including sleeping at the hospital at night. She has two other school-going children whom she needs to care for, including cooking their meals. She does not have a regular paying job as she has to look after Nurmaisara, almost full-time. Her eldest daughter in Form 5 relieves the mother in the hospital on some nights, so that Fazilah is able to rest. The bus fare from her house to the hospital is RM2.50 one way. So between the two of them, bus fare works out to RM10-RM20 per day, depending on how many trips they make to the hospital. Although the transport cost puts additional stress on the RM400 she gets from the government social welfare in lieu of the youngest daughter's illness, this is just short term.

The more pressing issue is the cost to care for Nurmaisara long term. Because of her impaired digestive system, most of what she consumes pass through without much being absorbed, which means she goes to the toilet about 10-12 times a day!!! Doctor has prescribed a special milk called Peptamen Junior which helps in cases of malabsorption. She is currently being fed Peptamen in the hospital, 4 times a day with 4 scoops of milk powder in each serving. With this, Nurmaisara only goes to the toilet once a day.

Fazilah is now worried about how she is going to sustain her daughter on Peptamen once she is discharged from the hospital. A quick check at a pharmacy in Damansara Uptown indicated that the small tin above cost RM78 (I only saw this at the pharmacy. Not sure if there is a Junior version). With her current consumption, it will be almost a tin a week, or about RM300 a month.

If you or your friends know of anyone in Nestle from whom we can buy the milk at a discounted price, or if you would like to help Fazilah by donating Peptamen, regardless of how many tins, please contact June at trccpenchala@gmail.com or call Kim at 012-3036019.

On behalf of Fazilah and Nurmaisara, we would like to say a BIG THANK YOU in advance for your generous support.
